Can I get a Stimulus!?!?!

In the April 6 edition of Ed Week Sean Cavanagh's article states that the end of the stimulus money is near and with it the end of the world!  Well, maybe not.  It will effect some states more than others but, most states, such as Oregon will see negative results as would be expected when money runs out.  States such as Florida are taking hits of up to ten percent which will force out up to 900 employees.  Ultimately these cuts will be noticed by parents when their children are in a classroom of thirty to forty students and when after school activities and electives are faded out.  This is hard and rough but I think it is something we can get through.  The laying off of teachers is a sad thing, but those remaining will not have the weight of the world on their shoulders.  Duties and responsibilities will increase but students will still get an education.  It may require more from everyone, parents, teachers, administrators and yes, even students.  One thing I have wondered for a while, is why do we not take advantage of our retired and elderly population.  Most of them know how to read and many would like the opportunity to volunteer and help out at schools.  They could make a great contribution to society and I see it as a wasted resource.
