An Infamous Gay In History
In the April 27 article about including gay history in California curricula by Erik W. Robelen we see the same old story of conservatives battling for last centuries way of life. These are the guys that always say, "I wish I had been born in the wild west!" I wish they had too. What I do not think they understand is that they are fighting the tide. The change in our hard headed society is gradual but it is happening. Whether we get on the bus or try and stop it by hanging on to the bumper is the choice before us. Those resisting will just get dragged down the road. Fitting. They could find ways of dealing with their bigotry that does not hurt people, but they would rather impose their biases on the world. The gay and lesbian community has made and are making great sacrifices to be who they are which I believe is protected in the constitution somewhere. If it is not, it ought to be. To insinuate gay-rights as some evil "agenda" I find sad. How many kids are hurt for life by the way they are treated for being who they are. Along with gay history we need the history of the disabled, more on Asian Americans and the Native tribes that no longer exist but once lived in this valley. And if stopping a childs life from being wrecked by exchanging a few things in the curriculum then so be it. Ponce De Leon? Seriously? If learning more about who gays and lesbians truly are has the chance to prevent bullying then it should be included.
