Wider Career Choices for Boys
The May 25 article by Sarah D. Sparks talks about the need for boys to be made aware that traditionally female careers such as nursing and elementary school teaching are career options. The article says the gift of the woman's movement was that it opened doors for women but there has been little push for men to get into fields normally occupied by women. Ha, ha! I am glad to be one who is crossing the boundary. Although, I think there is a reason for this. I was recently reading about the woman's movement in early American history and how the first careers available to women were nursing and education. The reason given for these fields opening up to women were that they were an extension of the females role at home. That of a care giving nurturer. I can see how to a degree that being a nurturer might have its challenges for many men. I have even considered that as one of my weaknesses. I understand that "Suck it up, kid" may not be the best way to help kids deal with certain issues. I also think this article was written by one of those people who believe that without a college education a person cannot have a career. Plumbers and electricians can do very well and some can even lead fulfilling lives. Shocking!
